Mohammed ZIllur Rahman was the president of Bangladesh and a senior presidium member of the largest political party, Awami League. Md. Zillur Rahman, Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh breathed his last at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 20, 2013. He protected the Awami League from breaking at the time of the caretaker government (2007-2009). As a result, Zillur Rahman was nominated for the 19th president of Bangladesh by the Awami League.
ZIllur Rahman Early life:
Zillur Rahman was born on 9 March 1929 at his mother’s paternal home, Poirtala, Brahmanbaria. His father Meher Ali Miah, was a famous lawyer, the Chairman of the then Mymensingh Local Board, and the Member of the District Board. He passed Matriculation from Bhairab K. B. High School in 1945 and Intermediate of Arts (IA) in 1947 from Dhaka Intermediate College. He earned Hons and Master’s Degree in History and Law degree from Dhaka University.
ZIllur Rahman Career:
In 1952, in the Bengali Language Movement, Rahman actively participated. He was elected as a member of parliament in the 1970 national elections of Pakistan, as a candidate of the Awami League. Rahman energetically participated in the Government-in-exile, during the Bangladesh liberation war.
Zillur Rahman became the General Secretary of the Awami League in 1972 and was elected as a parliament member in the general elections of 1973. After the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s political plot for Bangladesh was changed at that time Rahman was arrested by the Army Junta. He spent four years in prison.
Rahman served as a minister in the Awami League government in 1996 as an LGRD minister. He was elected parliament member in 1970 (Pakistan), 1973, 1996, 2001, and 2009.
